Western Horse Treks

A hill country horse trek is unique in that it is both invigorating and relaxing at the same time, true soul food. More than just pretty views, the smell of a horse, saddle leather and the North Island bush, the companionship of the noble horse - all of the senses are indulged. Museums allow us to look at the past, a hill country trek allows us to fully travel back in time and experience our past.

Bill and dogs

Hello, my name is Bill Newton and I am the owner operator of Adventure Horse Trekking.  You may have seen me at the Urenui Rodeo, an event I am engaged in biannually.

I have had a love of Western Horses and Western Horsemanship throughout my life and love to share these experiences.  Our high country property offers unique riding and panoramic scenery.  If you are well over flat land horse trekking and want to head out into the wilderness, this is the place for you.

Specializing in Western riding, we breed Quarter horses not only for trekking and work but also for the  purpose of the continuation of the Quarter horse breed in New Zealand. The horses we breed are used for open range cow work on our 2000 acre property.

On our hill country treks we can cater for young teenagers and adults. Occasionally the treks are incorporated into cattle work, giving smaller groups the opportunity to experience the life of a cow hand.  We cater for people of all levels of riding experience.

For younger children and family groups (such as birthdays) we offer beginner rides in confined areas.

Because safety is paramount, all riders are introduced to their horses and schooled briefly in our yard area prior to their trek. Correct riding instruction is paramount to a great riding experience in the hills, giving a great sense of achievement while enhancing the unique western experience. We use western saddles for the most comfortable ride producing minimum body fatigue.

Paddock experience

A paddock experience is for those unable to engage in a full trek. For example, a wilderness horse trek may not be suitable for the very young or elderly. As a contrast to this, a small ride in a confined area on Bill's well trained horses can be a highly rewarding experience, stimulating all of the senses. Small experiences can make a big difference to anyone's day.

This experience is suitable for all ages and we can accommodate large groups.
Price: $50 per horse.
